Information about Exam 4
About the Exam
The exam will be given starting at noon on Tues, Dec 6 and ending at 10 pm on Sat, Dec 11 in the Testing Center. Bring a scantron sheet (available in the bookstore) and your Dixie College ID with you, and make sure you can tell them my name (Sarah Black) and the class (Chem 1010, sec 2). You have an unlimited amount of time to take the exam, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time, and go to the bathroom first! The last exam is given out an hour before closing (9 pm). You should plan on about 2 hours to take the exam.
The testing center hours are:
Tues to Fri: 9 am – 10
pm
Sat: 2 pm – 10 pm
PLEASE NOTE: The Testing Center has
now moved to their new location in the northeast corner of the North
Plaza Building.
Because classes will have ended, NO LATE EXAMS will be given unless there are extraordinary circumstances. Let me know right away if something crazy happens – we may need to set up an incomplete contract to deal with this.
The exam will contain:
Part A: 30 pts short answers
Part B: 60 pts of multiple choice questions (30 questions, 2 pts each)
Part C: 10 pts for an essay question chosen from the list given below
A periodic table (just like the one I gave out in class) will be printed on the front of the exam for you to use.
Before you take this exam:
1. Review your Learning Guides, using the posted Lecture Notes on the course website to make sure that you have all of the information. If there is something you are confused about, read that section again carefully, then write down any questions that you'd like to discuss in the Review Session in class. (Note: material from the class discussion will NOT appear on the exam.)
2. Look at the Study Questions on Blackboard. Starting in the afternoon on the first day of the exam, you will be able to see the answers to these questions if you got them wrong. Make sure you understand the correct answer to all of the questions that were asked.
3. Go through each lecture and make a list of key terms and their definitions.
4. Look through the Unit 4 Learning Outcomes given on the course website. This will help you to know what you are supposed to be able to do with the information in each lecture.
5. Do the Exam 4 Review Questions in class or print them out from the course website. Look at the key to make sure you understand these concepts.
6. Look at each of the possible essay questions listed below. Be sure that you can write a thorough essay (1/2 to 3/4 page) on each topic.
Essay questions - One of the essay questions from the list below will appear on your exam (you will not be able to choose which one). You should be prepared to write a good, clear essay (1/2 to 3/4 page) about each one. Be sure to answer all parts of the question in your essay.
1. What is fire, and what makes it keep burning? What does it take to put a fire out? Give examples of three different ways to put out a fire, and explain why they work. Discuss the different kinds of fires, and why water is a bad choice for some kinds of fires.
2. Consider a snack of a peanut butter and honey sandwich and milk. Which of these contain simple carbohydrates (mono- and disaccharides), and which contain complex carbohydrates (starch or fiber)? Which contain proteins, and which are complete? Which contain fat, and is it saturated or unsaturated? What about the remaining macronutrient? Would this be a nutritious snack?
3. Why are Nutrition Facts labels required by law on all packaged food? List at least 6 items that you can find out from them, and classify them as macronutrients or micronutrients (if this applies). If you were comparing two brands of a similar food product, which items would you want to be higher? Which would you want to be lower?
