Group Discussion – High Fructose Corn Syrup

The class discussion for this unit will be about high fructose corn syrup. It has been in use as a sweetener in so many processed foods that it has become an important part of the American diet. Yet in recent years many concerns have been raised about possible effects it may cause on our health. This has been a topic in the media for several years – check out the images below being used by HFCS detractors.

Please spend at least 45 minutes researching this issue. Look at websites that defend HFCS as not detrimental to health as well as those that say that it is. Read critically, asking yourself if the information is credible, and look for possible bias (was this site created by the Corn Grower's Association?). Print out some copies of websites or make some notes to bring to class. Be prepared to argue either side!

If you will be absent on the day of this discussion or are unexpectedly unable to attend, please do the reading assignment, then write a 1-2 page paper explaining this issue. Make sure to present both sides, and then give your opinion as to which has the most merit. You will only receive half-credit for this assignment, since you weren't able to contribute to the class discussion or benefit from others' point of view.
