Group Discussion – Water Fluoridation
Assignment
Spend at least 45 minutes reading from any library or internet sources about whether it is a good idea to add fluorine to our drinking water. Read critically, considering the source - do you believe what you are being told? Look for sources that support water fluoridation, and those that oppose it. Make a list of arguments for and against, including at least three for each side. Look for supporting data to back up these arguments. You can either take notes on what you read, or bring copies of the information with important parts highlighted. I will not collect them, but will instead judge your preparation based on what you have to say. You will not know what side you will be assigned to argue until you come to class.
At the end of the class period, you will have the opportunity to write a brief essay explaining your actual opinion of the issue, no matter which side you were on during the discussion. Be ready to back up your opinion with some good, solid facts.
Make up assignment
If you will be absent on the day of this discussion or are unexpectedly unable to attend, please do the reading assignment, then write a 1-2 page paper explaining both sides of this issue. Conclude by choosing the side you find most convincing, and explain why you support this side. You will only receive half-credit for this assignment, since you weren't able to contribute to the class discussion or benefit from others' point of view. Please turn it in within a week of the original discussion date.
